Aquila in Uppsala wins Studentbostadspriset 2025

Aquila in Uppsala has been awarded Studentbostadspriset 2025. This accolade is presented by the industry organisation Studentbostadsföretagen to projects that demonstrate outstanding innovation, sustainability and design in student accommodation. This year, the award goes to the Akademiska Hus project Aquila.

Aquila was developed by Akademiska Hus in collaboration with Arkitema AB and PE Teknik & Arkitektur. The project is recognised for its holistic approach, combining architectural quality, social interaction and sustainable urban development in housing designed for students and researchers.

“We are incredibly proud and pleased that Aquila has won Studentbostadspriset 2025. The recognition confirms that it’s possible to combine sustainable urban development, social cohesion and high architectural standards in student housing,” says Linda Teng, Head of Concept for Student and Researcher Housing at Akademiska Hus.

Aquila offers a diverse mix of housing types for over 350 students and early-career researchers. The project has been designed to foster daily interaction and a sense of community, with clear ambitions around ecological sustainability. These include efficient use of resources and a design that minimises climate impact while making smart use of available living space.

The jury’s full citation:

“With Aquila, Akademiska Hus demonstrates how student accommodation can merge tradition with innovation. It is a bold example of how research, innovation and student engagement can be put into practice to help redefine student housing as a living concept.

Aquila offers a broad range of housing options tailored to students’ diverse needs. Thoughtfully designed environments that encourage interaction and community strengthen the project’s social sustainability. At the same time, strong ecological ambitions are evident throughout, with efficient resource use and a minimised climate footprint.

By transforming the site, designing for community and drawing on academic research, Aquila shows how the student housing of the future can be both sustainable and appealing. This is a project that expands our view of student accommodation and sets a new direction forward.”
