Major renovation of Frescati Backe in Stockholm
Thursday, 2 November 2017Akademiska Hus has worked with Stockholm University to review the possibility of gathering the child and youth studies in suitable premises at Frescati. Now, the long-awaited cluster will become reality and will also entail more attractive and efficient use of the premises at Frescati Backe.
Major effort to preserve details characteristic of the period
The buildings at Frescati Backe, which were built between 1940 and 1944 for the Royal Veterinary College and the Swedish National Veterinary Institute, were designed by architects Gunnar Asplund and Joel Lundeqvist. The two buildings to be renovated currently consist of older, out-of-date laboratories that will be converted into modern and flexible classrooms and office space. The buildings are green-labelled according to the Stockholm City Museum classification system, which is the city’s second highest level of protection for historic buildings. Consequently the renovation project is being carried out in close consultation with an architectural curator.
“It feels great to renovate and preserve a building that is so interesting architecturally, while refurbishing it for new, long-term and energy-efficient use. We look forward to carrying out this project with Stockholm University and working together to further develop the Frescati campus as an attractive and vibrant campus,” says Magnus Huss, market area director at Akademiska Hus.
The renovation at Frescati Backe is expected to begin in the spring of 2018 and will be completed by the fall of 2019.
