Akademiska Hus is investing approximately SEK 460 million in renovating the M-building in Lund, making it into an attractive study and research environment that is sustainable in the long term and in which students and researchers can meet.

The M-building was built in 1963, as one of architect Klas Anshelm’s classic buildings for what was then known as Lund Institute of Technology, and is today the Faculty of Engineering (LTH) at Lund University. The building plays host to research and teaching on subjects such as mechanical engineering, industrial management and logistics, solid mechanics and energy sciences. In order to fulfil the requirements of a modern learning and research environment, the four conjoined buildings will undergo a renovation and extension process, making the facilities offered more efficient and flexible.

“Fundamentally, the M-building is a very solid building with great potential for development into a modern, living research and study environment. For this reason, I’m delighted that in collaboration with Lund University we have decided to make the building fit for the future,” explains Market Area Director Birgitta van Dalen of Akademiska Hus.

The renovation project will open up what is currently a dark and closed-off building, transforming it into a study and research environment where students, researchers and employees will have new opportunities to meet and collaborate. The plan for the project includes creating a welcoming study landscape with more study areas, running between the building’s three entrances, across the entire building.

For LTH, it is important that we continue to provide high quality facilities and that they offer our researchers, teachers and students excellent working conditions. Several of the buildings in the LTH area have already undergone renovation, which brings us to the M-building, where both the large-scale laboratories and the teaching facilities have been in need of renovation for some time. We also want to create new kinds of teaching facilities and study rooms for our students, to give them the best possible learning environments,” explains Annika Mårtensson, pro dean at LTH and chairperson of the M-building renovation steering committee.

The so-called southern equipment building will become home to new laboratories for research into areas including robotics, batteries and direct current. A total of around 60 laboratories are set to be renovated and kitted out. Another key area of focus will be creating a better indoor climate and more efficient energy usage throughout the entire building.

The project will cover 24,400 m2, i.e. more or less the entirety of the M-building, with the exception of parts of the so-called northern equipment building. The renovation work is expected to begin towards the end of 2019, and is due for completion in June 2022.
