Akademiska Hus and Sahlgrenska Science Park are opening a new environment for life science companies at Medicinareberget in Gothenburg. The initiative includes 2,400 square metres of labs, office space and common areas, with a focus on collaboration with access to both a lab manager and shared equipment.

The completion of the Natrium building, which now houses the Faculty of Science at the University of Gothenburg, has created a unique vacancy at Medicinaregatan 9C. The premises, which previously housed the departments of biochemistry, biophysics, genetics and molecular biology, are now ready to be rented out to life science companies that need both labs and offices. The Shared Lab concept offers an engaging, collaborative environment with research equipment and business support, as well as access to Sahlgrenska Science Park’s CO-AX accelerator programme. The facilities are primarily intended for small companies, and by renting the space they have the opportunity to share knowledge and equipment, as well as to help each other.

“The future looks really exciting. Through this initiative, we are opening up the area to the business community in a completely different way than before. Both the university and the business community will benefit from this creative environment,” says Pontus Isaksson, Property Area Manager at Akademiska Hus.

Strategic location

Located in the middle of Medicinareberget, the premises are close to both Sahlgrenska University Hospital and the University of Gothenburg, as well as scenic areas, services and good transport links. Under this concept, Sahlgrenska Science Park hosts the companies, offering a wide range of services and running events and networking activities.

“One of the advantages of our collaboration with Akademiska Hus is that we can think big and develop our Shared Lab concept. It’s incredibly interesting and stimulating for our growth companies because we’re creating a unique environment where innovation can flourish, supported by strong academic and medical links,” says Karl Maack, Site Development Director at Sahlgrenska Science Park.

The fourth floor will be available for rent beginning in April. The floor has about twelve office spaces and twelve lab benches available for rent – many of them with sweeping views of Gothenburg. In the coming months, the other facilities on floors 2 and 3 will also be ready. In total, Akademiska Hus and Sahlgrenska Science Park expect to be able to offer 50 lab spaces with offices and another approximately 50 offices for research and science that improves human life and health.
