Akademiska Hus welcomes major student accommodation initiative

Friday, 4 July 2014
20,000 new student accommodations will be constructed by 2020. This was promised by Fredrik Reinfeldt at the Swedish conservative Moderate Party’s press conference in Visby during Almedals Week, and Akademiska Hus was named a key player in the initiative.

“Student accommodation will play a crucial role in the future development of Swedish centres of education and in reinforcing Sweden as a nation of knowledge. We are already involved in building student accommodation, but having such a clear target will increase the pace considerably,” comments Kerstin Lindberg Göransson, CEO, Akademiska Hus.

The construction and ownership of student accommodation is not currently part of Akademiska Hus’s mission, and it is unclear at present what Akademiska Hus's contribution will be.

“Reinfeldt has appointed a student accommodation negotiator to further define the goals for this important initiative as well as our role in the process, and we look forward to finding out more,” says Lindberg Göransson.

According to the Swedish conservative Moderate Party’s proposal, “the state-owned company Akademiska Hus will have its mandate increased to include the construction of new student accommodation, either through the company's own construction and ownership or in collaboration with others. It is estimated that Akademiska Hus has the capacity to create 12,000 new student accommodations by 2020 together with other players.”
