Akademiska Hus contributes to construction of student accommodation

Tuesday, 2 September 2014
Akademiska Hus is currently contributing to the construction of over 6,000 student accommodations throughout Sweden, for instance through the project Sthlm 6000+ in Stockholm. “Akademiska Hus aims to promote Sweden's development as a nation of knowledge. For this reason, we are taking our responsibility to help build more student accommodation. This issue is very important to us,” says Kerstin Lindberg Göransson, CEO, Akademiska Hus.

The construction and ownership of student accommodation is not part of Akademiska Hus's mission. But because of the serious shortage of student accommodation, and because attractive accommodation is a key part of a thriving and attractive campus environment, Akademiska Hus aims to make it easier for other players to construct accommodation.

“We are taking our responsibility to help solve the student accommodation shortage by transferring or selling our land to other players. We are planning this campus development in close collaboration with centres of education and municipal authorities,” says Kerstin Lindberg Göransson, CEO, Akademiska Hus.

Akademiska Hus is currently contributing to the construction of over 6,000 student accommodations in Stockholm, Uppsala, Lund, Gothenburg, Umeå and Luleå. Discussions are under way between Akademiska Hus and Lund University with the aim of creating 1,000 new student accommodations before the end of 2017. The Helsingkrona area will be ready to move into in 2015. 235 accommodations are being built in Uppsala and will be ready to move into in 2014. Local planning is currently in progress in Umeå and Luleå, where it is hoped that the new accommodation will be ready for occupation in early 2015.

In addition, Akademiska Hus is the initiator of Sthlm 6000+, a major collaborative project with players in the Stockholm region aimed at increasing student accommodation by 50% – or 6,000 accommodations – by 2017. 3,000 of these accommodations are being planned on Akademiska Hus's campuses, including KTH Campus and KI Campus Solna.

“Stockholm is located in one of Europe's leading knowledge regions. More student accommodation is needed to attract more students and talent to the region's universities and colleges. This is the reason for carrying out this major project,” says Sten Wetterblad, Regional Director Akademiska Hus Stockholm and chairman of the steering committee for Sthlm 6000+.
