New construction with park for more green meeting points on KTH Campus

Thursday, 21 May 2015
As the School of Architecture and the Built Environment at KTH in Stockholm grows and develops, Akademiska Hus is investing SEK 193 million in new premises on the campus. As part of the initiative to make the campus more vibrant and sustainable, rooftop solar panels are being installed and a terraced park is being created immediately adjacent to the building.

The 5,500-square-metre, 5-storey building for the School of Architecture and the Built Environment (ABE School) will be centrally located on campus, which contributes to the University’s goal to increase its outreach efforts in the community. The building will mainly contain offices and group rooms that offer the potential to hold seminars, exhibitions and trade fairs for students, researchers, politicians and the business community. A link is also being built to the neighboring building, which houses the Centre for Transportation Studies (CTS). The traditional brick facade has a modern twist in order to blend in with the listed building environment while expressing its own contemporary style.

The initiative is well in line with the recently announced campus plan, which states that the campus will be a vibrant, sustainable, and safe part of the city. The building, which will have solar panels and a sedum roof, aims to achieve gold level in the “Miljöbyggnad” Green Building certification system. A terraced park environment is also being installed immediately adjacent to the building in an effort to meet the need for more green meeting points where visitors can linger.

“Together with the customer we want to develop the campus in a sustainable manner. The project is a shining example of how we implement our plan, while contributing to the development of Stockholm into an attractive ‘university capital’ and knowledge region,” says Sten Wetterblad, Regional Director for Akademiska Hus Stockholm region.

“As one of Europe’s leading universities of technology, it is important that we grow sustainably. The new building and park will make the KTH Campus a more attractive and vibrant area,” says Stellan Lundström, Dean of the ABE school at KTH.

Construction will begin in June and occupancy is expected in June 2017. The building was designed by the architectural firm AIX Arkitekter.
