New building at Umeå University
The new building will meet Umeå University's need for premises for teaching, exams and offices. With its strategic and central location in the middle of campus, the building will be the area's future hub.
About the new building at Umeå University
The idea is that the building will be connected to the Universe, Aula Nordica and the Science Building and strengthen Campus Umeå's physical identity. The 9,500-square-metre building will cover five floors and contain premises for teaching, offices, study spaces and a café. The building will also create various examination halls with space for up to 540 people, which means that Umeå University will be able to gather all its examination rooms on the main campus for the first time.

Flexible spaces for increased utilization
To maximize the efficient use of the building's spaces, they will be designed with flexibility to easily adapt to different activities. This means, for example, that exam halls can be converted into lecture halls when the need arises, and vice versa, lecture halls can be used as exam halls during intensive exam periods. This high degree of generality and user flexibility creates a sustainable building that is future-proof over the long term.
Sustainability goals
Umeå University and Akademiska Hus have ambitious sustainability goals. By implementing various measures, such as evaluating all system choices from a climate perspective and equipping the building with solar panels, we ensure that it becomes a climate-smart building with a low CO2 footprint.
Another sustainability aspect contributing to a reduced climate footprint is that the building was initially planned to be larger than it will now be. By collecting data and analyzing how the university's existing facilities can be better utilized, Akademiska Hus and Umeå University have significantly reduced the original need for new construction.
