Tjärnö Marine Laboratory is located in northern Bohuslän, next to Kosterhavet National Park and Sweden's most species-rich sea area. The location close to the sea and the proximity to the deep waters of the Koster Fjord create unique conditions for marine research and university education.

The campus area is designed to bring together research, education and housing in the same place. There are laboratories and water laboratories, teaching facilities, workshops, canteens and reception centres. Several of the buildings and business premises are located directly adjacent to the sea, which provides good opportunities to combine work in laboratories with studies and research out in the marine environment.

Together, the properties form a specialised campus environment where premises, technical infrastructure and proximity to the sea support the special needs of marine operations.
