Akademiska Hus is active in the green bond market since 2019. This gives lenders a unique opportunity to invest in sustainable projects that strengthen Sweden as a knowledge nation.
As one of the country's largest real estate companies, Akademiska Hus has a great responsibility to contribute to the development of a sustainable society in the long term. Sustainability therefore permeates everything we do when we build and manage knowledge environments for research, education and innovation in close collaboration with our customers. For us, it is as much about minimizing the climate impact of the individual buildings as it is about ensuring that an entire campus becomes an area where social, economic and ecological values interact.
Solid foundation for sustainability work
Akademiska Hus’ sustainability work is founded on the UN Global Compact’s ten principles covering human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption, as well as the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We have seven company-wide sustainability targets, one of which is to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 – a target that has been verified by the Science Based Targets initiative.
Uppdated green framework
As part of our financial sustainability work, Akademiska Hus, together with Handelsbanken, has established a Green Bond Framework for the issuance of green bonds. The framework was updated in 2026 with stricter climate requirements, including defined thresholds for embodied emissions in both new construction and renovations, as well as the integration of the company’s four-step principle to ensure resource-efficient construction.
The framework is based on ICMA’s Green Bond Principles and has been reviewed by S&P Global Ratings, which considers it to be aligned with these principles and has assigned it a Medium Green rating. Our green bonds are issued under our EMTN programme and are followed up through annual reporting published on the Akademiska Hus website.
