Breakfast Talk – "Show like IKEA": Why good visualisation helps us do things we've never done

The Breakfast Talk is a great opportunity to gather in a relaxed environment before the start of the working day, where you can enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet while gaining new knowledge from our guest speakers.

"Show like IKEA": Why good visualization helps us do things we've never done

Johan Lundell from Nodd AB

Do you remember a single sentence you heard yesterday? Yet the norm in all education is precisely these words, which few remember; few choose directions rather than maps to understand.

Insights and decisions based on words, require you to read or listen and remember the words. However, you do not need to memorize the drawing or the map, either to use or develop them.

Would LEGO and IKEA have succeeded without their, almost wordless, instructions that make children and adults build things they have never seen without education? Yet, instructions, routines, and information are prescribed in ways that make the information more difficult to understand and create unnecessary problems for dyslexics.

Without musical notes, we would not have symphony orchestras. Still, almost all industries lack equivalents to (almost) wordless industry notes, which also does not need to be translated.

Pie, pie and bar charts are not potent enough to carry CAD data, map data or music data as well as drawings, maps and music sheet music do, yet these charts are used for lots of other data instead of developing potent notations or equivalents to chemistry's periodic table of elements.

London's famous tube map does not show the stations where they are actually located, but shows so that lines and changes are clear. Still, most people choose to slavishly use ordinary, "unformatted" drawings and maps without these, so important, functional adaptations.

Alternatives to words, such as photo and film, are limited by showing just how things look from an angle. Overlays, perspective changes, symbols, and views provide greater functionality for users.

Information is not words. Information is not numbers.

Words and numbers can of course carry information, but rarely in a very good way.

Potent visualizations help people and organizations understand things they never understood and do things they never did.

Take the opportunity to be inspired by Uppsala innovator Johan Lundell, founder of the visualization company Nodd AB, who has received several awards and won the Swedish Public Employment Service's major innovation competition, "Arbetsmarknad för alla", for the company's (almost) wordless language.

He shows examples from his collaborations with, among others, SLU, Vattenfall, SSAB, Volvo and others.
