Final sprint for Learning Lab Umeå

After four years of exploratory activities, the Learning Lab Umeå project will end at the end of the year. On 12 November, a "digital kickout" was held within the network Room for Learning.

Under the heading Hybrid teaching: hype, hope or hybrid everyday life? Up to a hundred participants gathered on Zoom to take part in experiences and reflections from the work with hybrid learning environments and the lessons learned from the test activities are many.

"The whole idea of this test bed was to create a place where we together – property owners and universities – could explore technology, space and pedagogy and change the environment based on the experiences we received from teachers and students. To be able to take part in all the insights as we approach the end of the project feels fantastic," says Kajsa Winnes, Akademiska Hus.

Learning Lab Hybrid Umeå is a collaborative project between Umeå University and Akademiska Hus with the aim of building knowledge about how space, pedagogy and technology can be developed together for the learning environments of the future. The project has both been based on existing research and conducted its own research to create new knowledge. Since the autumn of 2022, teachers have had the opportunity to test and further develop teaching methods in the specially equipped classroom in the Natural Sciences Building at Umeå University, with both pedagogical and technical support close at hand.

During the meeting, insights from the work were shared with everything from practical challenges to successes and new lessons. The conversation gave a clear picture of how complex but also enabling hybrid learning environments can be when pedagogy, technology and room design meet in the same project.

"Hybrid is not a quick fix. It requires well-thought-out planning where pedagogy, design and human encounters are key. Technology makes it possible, but pedagogy is decisive," summed up Åse Tieva, senior lecturer at Umeå University.

Even after the kickout event, the work of compiling the project's experiences is now continuing . The final report, which will be published at the beginning of next year , will provide an in-depth picture of the results and the insights that can guide the development of the learning environments of the future.
