Sustainable use of premises

Target for more sustainable use of facilities

Akademiska Hus collaborates with universities to increase utilisation rates. Our sustainable space utilisation index measures the use of teaching facilities between 08:00 and 17:00 on weekdays. Using sensors, we can track occupancy across more than 2,000 teaching spaces on ten campuses. The index is designed to enable comparisons between space utilisation in 2025 and the first year of measurement.

Sensors on campus an important tool

In recent years, we have taken clear steps to build a common fact-based understanding of how premises on campus are actually used. With a long-term investment of around 40,000 sensors, an investment of approximately SEK 100 million, we have created completely new opportunities to follow the degree of utilisation and variation over time. Through dialogue with the higher education institutions and joint analyses, this provides a significantly better basis for decision-making for local planning than before.

The analyses show that further efficiency improvements can be achieved, which requires some adaptation of the premises but above all extensive change work at the higher education institutions. Efficient use of premises is largely about working methods, scheduling, pedagogy and culture. Our role is to be an active and constructive partner in this transition.
