Widerströmska
Widerströmska has offices and teaching facilities for Karolinska Institutet and the Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control. The building consists of two parts: seven and ten storeys, adapted to the surroundings. Pointed gables and angles create a dynamic shape with brick patterns in light concrete. The foyer with its glass façade facing Solnavägen promotes meetings between students and researchers.
About Widerströmska
Widerströmska consists of two structures and houses offices and teaching facilities for Karolinska Institutet and the Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control. The lower part of Widerströmska has seven floors and scales appropriately with the older buildings on Campus Solna. The taller part, with ten floors, scales with the new buildings emerging along Solnavägen.
The building features pointed gable ends and non-right angles, giving it a more dynamic shape. This is further enhanced by a horizontal facade division with distinct window bands that wrap around the entire building. The older buildings on Campus Solna are predominantly brick structures, and this is echoed in the Widerström Building but with a modern twist—brick embedded in light concrete. The resulting pattern appears striped from a distance and like a patterned knitted sweater up close, adding further dynamism.
The foyer, located closest to the street, spans two floors with a glass facade facing Solnavägen and the entrance plaza. The entrance and foyer are shared by the entire building, creating opportunities for interaction between students and researchers.
