At Frescati, two sites of cultural and historical significance have been restored as part of our work to develop campus environments where buildings, outdoor spaces and history are closely connected. In close collaboration with the County Administrative Board of Stockholm, we have carried out two projects that highlight the original landscape features surrounding Bloms hus and Småbrukarhemmet.
The work at Bloms hus is based on historical drawings and photographs showing how the entrance once gave the building a clear and central position within the campus environment. Through the project, the design of the entrance has been reinstated, pedestrian routes have been realigned, and a circular feature with period-appropriate planting and seating has been added to frame the site and create a natural connection between the building and surrounding pathways. The lighting has also been enhanced to give the building a more welcoming presence in the evening.

At Småbrukarhemmet, the focus has been on restoring the historic pond and the garden setting that once surrounded the building. The pond has been refurbished and complemented by a new stream that channels rainwater into the water feature. The staircase leading towards the nearby Allhuset Lantis has also been reinstated, natural stone surfaces have been restored, and the planting has been upgraded with species typical of the Royal National City Park. Today, the overall result is a cohesive and welcoming environment that preserves both natural and cultural heritage values.
Yesterday’s inauguration brought together representatives from the County Administrative Board of Stockholm, Stockholm University and Akademiska Hus, who were able to see firsthand how the work to enhance the historic environments has taken shape. Speakers at the inauguration included Johanna Lindgren, Director of Environment at the County Administrative Board, Åsa Borin, University Director at Stockholm University, Serhat Ok, Property Director at Akademiska Hus, and Marcus Rancken, Strategic Property Developer at Akademiska Hus. The speeches highlighted the importance of building on historical qualities in campus development, how collaboration between the parties made the initiative possible, and how the restored environments can now contribute to a more cohesive and long-term sustainable campus environment at Frescati.
The projects demonstrate how long-term stewardship and development can be combined, with history serving as a valuable resource in the work.
