Akademiska Hus continues its expansion of solar cells – makes its biggest investment to date

New solar cells have been installed at the Arrhenius Laboratory at Stockholm University, which together are estimated to produce about 470,000 kWh of renewable electricity each year. The investment in solar energy is an important part of Akademiska Hus' work to reach net zero by 2040 and to consolidate its role as one of the real estate companies in the country with the most solar cell installations.

Akademiska Hus is expanding the production of renewable electricity by installing and commissioning four new solar cell systems at the Arrhenius block on the Frescati campus. The solar panels cover a total area of about 2,600 square meters and are not only the largest installation of solar cells made at Frescati, but within the entire company.

"By investing in energy sources that are both fossil-free and renewable, we can reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. It makes our campuses even more sustainable and is a way for us to achieve Akademiska Hus' climate goal - net zero throughout the value chain by 2040," says Erik Florman, Head of Sustainability at Akademiska Hus.

A total of 730,000 kWh of solar energy at Frescati – and 17 million kWh throughout the country

The addition from the new solar cells at the Arrhenius Quarter, together with the already existing solar cell systems at Stockholm University, will increase Frescati's total energy production of solar electricity to approximately 730,000 kWh annually. This, in turn, accounts for almost four per cent of the campus area's annual electricity consumption.

"Stockholm University has an ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040, but large parts of our greenhouse gas emissions can only be reduced through collaboration with other actors. I am therefore very pleased that Akademiska Hus has chosen to invest in energy sources that are both fossil-free and renewable," says Magnus Breitholtz, Adviser to the Vice-Chancellor for Sustainability and Collaboration at Stockholm University.

In total, Akademiska Hus now has 193 solar cell installations in its national property portfolio, which is estimated to produce close to 17 million kWh of sustainable electrical energy annually for Swedish higher education institutions. This makes Akademiska Hus one of the real estate companies in the country with the most solar cell installations. In 2026, the company will take further action and plan for another 20 or so new facilities.
