A New Universe

The Universe building at Campus Umeå will be transformed into a vibrant meeting place where students, academia, businesses, and the wider community come together. The initiative reinforces the building’s role as the heart of the campus, the main entrance, and a central hub for services, meetings, and experiences.

About the renovation

Akademiska Hus is investing approximately SEK 200 million in a major redevelopment of Universum at Campus Umeå. The initiative will transform the building into a modern and vibrant meeting place where students, academia, businesses, and the wider community can come together throughout much of the day and evening.

Universum will be adapted to meet future needs with flexible environments for studying, meetings, innovation, culture, and services. Once completed, the building will include more study spaces and group rooms, enhanced conference and meeting facilities, event spaces, and innovation environments. Plans also include a student pub, restaurant and café services, an Infocenter and student services, as well as service functions such as a bookstore, convenience services, and a hairdresser.

The goal is to create an open and inclusive destination with a strong campus atmosphere and a broad range of services – a natural gathering place for students, staff, and visitors alike.

A meeting place at the heart of campus

Universum will become an open and inclusive place where people want to meet, stay, and take part in campus life. The redevelopment will create better opportunities for collaboration between the university, students, businesses, and the wider community.

The goal is for Universum to become a natural destination at Campus Umeå – a place for knowledge, new ideas, services, culture, and social interaction. The project will also strengthen the connection between the campus and the University City of Umeå.

A new main entrance to campus

As part of the project, the western entrance will be redesigned as the entrances to Universum and Aula Nordica are brought together. This will create a clearer main entrance to both Universum and the campus area as a whole.

History

Since its inauguration in 1970, Universum has been a central meeting place at Campus Umeå and a well-known part of university life in the city. Over the years, the building has served as everything from a student union venue and restaurant to a concert and event arena with a vibrant student and cultural scene. Generations of students have gathered here for studies, activities, concerts, and social interaction.

With this redevelopment, Universum is taking the next step in its evolution – carrying its history and identity as a meeting place into the campus environment of the future.
