Student survey shows – campus plays a major role

The physical study environment is important for how well Swedish students perform. This is expressed by the students themselves in the Student Barometer 2025.

Akademiska Hus has conducted a survey through Norstat in which approximately 1,000 students around Sweden have had their say on their knowledge environment. The results show that the campus creates conditions for studies that the students value highly. In total, 71 percent think that the campus provides very good, or good conditions, for studies. The function on campus that students attach the greatest importance to is study places. As many as 91 percent believe that study places on campus have a great or very large impact on their study results.

Libraries are students' favourite

We asked the students to choose their favourite places on campus and to justify their choice. We received over 400 responses, and when we analysed them, we found that about 25 per cent highlighted libraries, which are associated with study peace and see as a quiet and cosy place to be. In addition to the libraries, group rooms for studying with friends are often highlighted, as well as nature and outdoor environments on campus.

A consistent pattern for the free-text responses we received throughout the Student Barometer 2025 is that places for recovery, study places – individually or in groups – are popular. This further confirms the picture from previous years' surveys, that students value these functions highly and that they would like to see more investments in the area.

Safety on campus

A basic prerequisite for being able to study and feel good is to feel safe: 85 per cent of the students state in the survey that they feel safe on their campus and 73 per cent describe that they feel good or very happy in their knowledge environment.

The study period is not only about performing and achieving a degree, the social dimension also plays a role in the experience. The campus is a place where many interactions take place: three out of four students say that they have developed close relationships during their studies.

Close access to campus – especially important for younger students

Living close to campus appears to be significant, especially among younger students. In the group 19 years and younger, as many as 73 percent believe that proximity to campus is important, compared to 45 percent in total. Proximity also affects how much time students say they spend on campus: over 90 per cent of those who live close by spend time there every week, compared to just over half of those who live further away.
