Energy focus over time makes a big difference
The energy needs of buildings over time account for the largest climate impact in building operations. Here, Akademiska Hus has worked strategically and purposefully to make a difference for a long time. As a major player, we have a great opportunity to influence the industry and thereby reduce society's climate footprint.
Energy targets 2026-2030
Reduce the amount of purchased energy by 10 percent
By 2030, we will reduce the amount of purchased energy by 10 percent compared to the level in 2026. This is an ambitious goal, because we have already come a long way. Between the years 2000-2025, we halved the amount of energy delivered (-48.5 percent).
Our goal gives us direction and we continue our work to optimize the energy efficiency of the campus, without compromising on the indoor environment for students and staff. We do this by using energy as efficiently as we can and by integrating flexible, fossil-free solutions into our property areas. The focus going forward will be a lot on cutting power peaks and using the energy we have as smartly as possible.
Ambitious goals yield strong results
In order to achieve the overall energy goal and at the same time contribute to the climate goal, we work through three main principles – Reduce, Collaborate and Promote.
Reduce
We reduce energy and power requirements in construction and in our existing property portfolio by: (1) Ensuringbuilding design with high durability, energy-efficient building envelope and energy-efficient technical systems and solutions. (2) By conducting systematic and ongoing energy work in the existing portfolio with a focus on operational optimisation and energy efficiency measures. (3) Bycollaborating with our customers to reduce energy use and climate impact from their operations by introducing contract models that promote energy efficiency and that motivate sustainable behaviours.
Collaborate
By collaborating in our overall portfolio and by taking advantage of surplus and deficit energy between the buildings, we ensure that our overall energy needs are reduced.
Whenever possible, we collaborate with the energy suppliers' systems with the aim of optimising energy delivery from a power and climate perspective.
Promote
We promote the use of energy with a low climate impact through the installation of local renewable energy plants. We also influence the energy industry by actively requesting a supply of heating and cooling with a low climate impact.
Taken together, the three parts of Reduce - Collaborate and Promote constitute the three parts of our overall energy work.
Leading the way with solar energy
We invest in the production of renewable energy on campus with a strong focus on solar cells. Our campuses are becoming more sustainable and we are creating new opportunities to focus on the energy issue together with our customers, which makes us one of the real estate companies with the most solar cell systems.
