The new student housing will be named Mira and will consist of a new eight-storey building that houses 101 apartments with room for 309 people. On the ground floor, common areas will be placed in the form of a laundry room and bicycle parking. The investment is an important contribution to reducing the current student housing shortage.
"We know that the demand for student housing is high around the country, which is why Akademiska Hus is working hard to create more housing on campus. It is important to us and in this case Gothenburg as an attractive student city. Housing also contributes to a more open campus that comes alive around the clock," says Anna Alsborger, Property Director at Akademiska Hus.
Akademiska Hus has signed an agreement for block rental of all apartments in Mira with Stiftelsen Chalmers Studenthem, which in turn will be the party that rents out the apartments.
"Campus proximity is one of the students' strongest wishes when it comes to housing and a key to attracting talents to both Chalmers and Gothenburg," says Joakim Wallin, CEO of Stiftelsen Chalmers Studenthem.
Classic studios and shared accommodation
The apartments will be classic student studios and duo apartments for two people. Space will also be made here for larger apartments according to Akademiska Hus' student housing concept for coliving. In these apartments, up to six people live, each with their own bedroom but sharing a kitchen, living room and bathroom.
"Coliving has many advantages. It promotes social community and prevents the loneliness that many students feel when they move to a new city. In addition, it is good from a sustainability perspective when functions and spaces are shared," says Linda Teng, concept manager for student and researcher housing at Akademiska Hus.
The first step in the realisation of a new detailed plan
It was in August 2023 that a new zoning plan was adopted for Gibraltarvallen, where the land is 90 percent owned by Akademiska Hus. The detailed plan enables the construction of new housing, services and academic activities together with a new square and a new park, thus providing the conditions for Campus Johanneberg to develop into an even more integrated part of the city. Mira will be the first step in realising the detailed plan. In addition to housing for students and researchers, the building will also house a grocery store and smaller commercial premises on the ground floor.
In total, Mira covers approximately 9,300 m2. The facades will be built from recycled brick and the building will be equipped with a wooden frame, French balconies and a glazed entrance floor facing Gibraltargatan. To reduce the building's energy consumption, solar cells and heat recovery from the grocery store are installed. Construction is planned to start in early 2026 with possible occupancy of the student housing from winter 2027.
