Medicinareberget is located in central Gothenburg, north of Sahlgrenska Hospital and southeast of Linnéplatsen. Today, the area is mainly home to research and education in medicine, life sciences, natural sciences and technology at the University of Gothenburg. At the same time, the area currently has relatively few connections to the surrounding city and large parts are difficult to access.
The goal is to take a holistic approach to the area and its unique conditions. By densifying and connecting Medicinareberget with the city, the identity of the place can be strengthened, a more attractive and vibrant campus can be created and the University of Gothenburg's position as a city university can be further consolidated.
"Medicinareberget has fantastic potential. Here, we want to give the University of Gothenburg greater opportunities to develop, while at the same time opening up the campus and linking it closer to the rest of the city. Our vision is a green and vibrant district where education and research coexist with business, housing, services and meeting places. The fact that the City of Gothenburg is now giving the green light to start the detailed planning work is a very gratifying and important step," says Pontus Isaksson, Property Area Manager at Akademiska Hus.
Structure plan: White Arkitekter
A district where academia, business and housing meet
The design proposal potentially includes approximately 200,000 square meters of new building rights and provides space for a mix of activities and functions such as educational and research premises, offices, laboratories, services, student and researcher housing and other housing. With new roads and entrances, the connection between the area and the city will be strengthened, while accessibility for both transport and pedestrians and cyclists will increase.
"The development will also create long-term conditions for the life science sector and for an area where academia and business can meet. Here is an opportunity to develop a world-class cluster in natural science and medical education and research, in collaboration with the business community," says Pontus Isaksson.
Green environments and new routes
The area as a whole has great natural values and views of the city. The design proposal means that most of the untouched nature will be preserved and made accessible to the citizens of Gothenburg. Special care will also be taken to create the conditions for green environments with landscaped parks, urban places and paths.
The planning matter states that the City of Gothenburg intends to start work on the detailed plan in the first quarter of 2027. A possible realization of the project will be carried out in collaboration with the city and other actors in the real estate industry.
